Quickwrite – Choose one of the three options and complete before 1 pm

Quick-WriteToday you are going to choose one of the 3 options below and complete a silent quickwrite. This exercise should take you about 30 minutes. There are two stages to this quickwrite. First you will organize your thoughts using one of 2 forms of graphic organization: either a mind web or point form notes. See the examples below.

  • Thanks for the garlic-glavoured chewing gum

Refugee Crisis in Syria

Syria Crisis stats Dec 2013Syria has been a hotbed of conflict for some time and the refugees fleeing their home in search of asylum are always growing in number. This has caused an influx of refugees particularly in the countries neighbouring Syria.

Your assignment:

  • Copy the notes taken on the Syrian crisis during your academic rotations today.
  • This afternoon we will watch the video shown below and compare to the notes you copied in the morning.
  • Read the news story from CBC that discusses what the United Nations (UN) thinks of the world’s response to this crisis.
  • Discuss as a class what Canada should do
  • Writing assignment: You need to write a response to the question “What should Canada do in response to the Syrian refugee crisis?”
    • Your response must be at least 150 words (3/4 of a page) and-written in your social studies notebook.  When you are satisfied with your response you are to take a picture of it and post it to your blog.
    • Be sure to use a graphic organizer that you will paste onto your rough draft before writing anything. (download a copy of the graphic organizer here if you lost the copy Mr. E provided you)
    • Rubric: You are going to be graded on…
      • Strong topic sentence stating a direct opinion about what you think Canada should do
      • Supporting evidence that argues your opinion and proves to the reader that you are right to think what you think
      • A possible objection someone might have to your thinking
      • A response you have to that objection
      • Closing thought that reminds the reader of what your opinion is or challenges them with a question.
