The Disappearing Ch. 2

The Disappearing

Chapter 2

We were left speechless in the ghostly bedroom. What did it mean: the clock was ticking? The note gave us chills. We had to make at least a semi-organized plan if we even had a chance of saving our friends.

We sat cross-legged on the cold, itchy carpet. Charlotte was the first to speak. “Didn’t you see what happened, there is no saving them. We shouldn’t have come here in the first place!” “And who’s fault is that,” I spat at her. Charlotte was the one who tried so hard to encourage us into coming in this haunted place. “Your saying we should just leave them here?” Autymn questioned. “There already dead”, Cameron protested. We were left there unable to find words to respond to that comment.

Francesca broke the silence that lasted a second to long. Her voice was quiet and shaking a little, “I think we should at least try to save them.” “I agree”, Autymn replied. This is why I enjoy Francesca’s and Autymn’s company the most. They never give up even when you can barely see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I nodded, considering the chance that we all make it out alive. “Good luck with that,” Cameron said sarcastically, while he and Charlotte lifted themselves off the floor and walked out of the pale bedroom, quickly past the door with rusted hinges, and out of our sight.

It was only me, Francesca and Autymn left in the bedroom. We decided to look around the room for anything that might help us. There was a dark maroon nightstand. The paint was fading revealing the wood underneath. On top of it was a lacey, off-white place mat, with a little lamp on top of it.  The lampshade was covered in dust particles and the bulb was dead. There was dresser that was off-white with a dark blue placemat that matched the bed skirt. There was a closet that mainly had elegant dresses and pullover cardigans inside.

After all that searching, we couldn’t find anything helpful. We sat back down laying the two notes we had collected in front of us. “Do you think the first note meant that the person writing it needs help?” asked Francesca, “Maybe they thought if they took our friends, we could save them and our friends at the same time!” I speculated at that. After everything that had happened, and being one step away from a nervous breakdown, that anything might just be possible. It still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but at least it was a little bit sensible. Maybe.

“I-” when I got cut off by a shriek from the walls again. It sounded like something that could only exist in the underworld. It was enough to make your ears bleed and their drums burst. We were all startled and jumped up. The shriek only happens when it takes…someone. Cameron and Charlotte. We all thought the same thing.

We ran past the door and down the creaking stairs to see Cameron frozen still. Charlotte’s sandals were in front of him, which were positioned in a way that made it look like she was just about to open the door. “We can’t leave,” Cameron said quietly.

It looked as if he was staring holes right through the door, not looking at anything particular. It looked like he had just come back from war and he had the only beating heart left. The expression was pure defeat.  There was another note on the sandals, “Tick Tock, Tick Tock, Come Play With Me”.

We were finally able to get a sentence out of Cameron. He told us that as soon as Charlotte’s hand touched the doorknob, there was a bright flash right in front of him then nothing. Charlette was gone followed by a shriek. He then agreed to help find our friends since there is no hope of getting past that door.  He told us that it might be a good idea to explore more rooms in the house. We agreed with him.

The bathroom was the first room we explored. There was no flooring beside cold cement. The toilet looked and smelled very old. The sink smelt of deviled eggs with yellow goo bubbling from the drain. The sound of it was like someone squishing brains, like in one of those awful horror movies that give you nightmares for a week after. The sound was quite unsettling.

I turned my head to the bathtub. My jaw almost hit the floor. Across the white curtains there was red streaks across the bottom reaching up to about halfway. Autymn and Francesca walked over and peeled the curtain back making a rattling noise. Nothing.

There was a blue little rug that smelled of hospital mixed with a care home for elders. Next to it was only one thing, a bottle that read. Blood remover. “We should get out of here,” Francesca whispered.

I turned for the door which was left open from when we walked in. As soon as I stepped out, I felt a liquid hit my face. The smell I recognized a soon as it trickled down my forehead, to my nose. Blood. I looked up to see…

Chapter 3

The Disappearing

The Disappearing

Chapter 1

We started ambling toward the unstable house. I was there with some of my friends. Most of them refused to come with us, though. The only ones that decided to come were Autymn, Francesca, Dylan, Charlotte, Moxie, and Cameron.

Don’t ask us why we went, because we can’t give you an answer.  I knew Autymn and Francesca from school, we became friends in 8th grade. That summer before high school we meet Dylan, Cameron, Moxie and Charlotte at the summer carnival. That was two years back.

The lawn was unsullied, which just made it more eerie. The dwelling had mossy, curled shingles. The paint was peeling from the outer walls. The window frames were parting from the walls leaving openings. The door knob, once golden, was brown and rusted. The stone path leading to the house, was cracked and slowly disintegrating. The porch’s fence was losing bolts and was misshaped. It gave off an unearthly vibe.

We made it to the stairs leading up to the porch. Francesca went first, the stairs gave a chilling creak. We followed slowly. Francesca’s hand was shaking as she tentatively reached for the door knob. She slowly turned the knob.

The door opened deliberately into darkness. Francesca let out a scream. We all jumped back and started pivoting to run. We heard Francesca laughing behind us. I slapped her in the back of the head lightly. She kept laughing though. “Good job Francesca, you just got a free ticket to go into the house first,” Dylan called from behind. That made Francesca turn pale and stop giggling.

Francesca slowly, step by step, walked in. Autymn gave her a push from the back which ended with her falling forward. She caught her footing before she fell. We heard Charlotte scream. We turned back to see her franticly touching her hair. I saw a bat flying through the door. “You okay princess?” I asked. That ended with me getting back handed in the face.

We clicked our flashlights on. We could see mice scuttering across the floor. I saw with my peripheral vision, Moxie shudder beside me. There were two couches. Both torn and chewed be rats.  There was a shelf above a fireplace with dust and cobwebs on it. There were pictures of three boys and two girls. The pictures looked very old. It was faded, which made them look ghostly. Above it was a big portrait of a limber woman.  She was wearing a dark blue satin dress. There was white lace stitched on.  She had a pearl necklace with a matching bracelet and earrings. Her smile didn’t fit her for some reason. It had a sinister look to it.

We saw a staircase to the left of us. We tip toed to the bottom of the stairs. Autymn took the turn leading us up the stairs. The stairs creaked as we slowly placed our feet on each step. Dylan was behind everyone, making jokes and laughing at the fact that we were shaking.

Suddenly we heard a scream come from Dylan. We didn’t turn around since we thought he was joking. We heard a muffled sound. Autymn turned around. She turned back speechless. All that was left of Dylan was his red converse sneakers and a note that read, “Help me please, Help me!”  Then a shriek came from the walls. We sprinted up the stairs and turned sharply to the right. We ended up in a bedroom.

The bedroom had a king-sized bed in it. The moonlight shone into and through the broken window. The room lit up with a pale light. The same portrait, which hung above the fireplace, hung above the bed.  The wallpaper was peeling, like the paint on the outside of the house.

Moxie walked to the edge of the bed. All the sudden, Francesca screamed, “Moxie… run!” A wrinkled, partly disintegrated hand reached out, grabbed Moxie’s ankle and pulled her under it. Cameron ran to the bed, got on his hands and knees to look under the bed. He found nothing but Moxie’s black boots and another note like the one on Dylan’s converse sneakers. It had a different message though, “The clock is ticking, better save them!” There was a lightning strike, which lit up the room. The wooden door, of which we walked in earlier, slammed shut. Followed by another shriek from the walls.

Chapter 2…

The Self-absorbed Husky

The Self-absorbed Husky

When I opened my eyes all I saw was white. The weather was abominable.  Hello, I guess I should introduce myself before we get any further into my story, or whatever you would like to call this. I am a husky from Churchill, Canada. I have elegant, soft white fur. Every time  I am out strolling with my owner, a many people comment on my fur and how charming it is.  I am part of the fastest dogsled team in our area.  My owner has eleven other Alaskan and Siberian huskies. I am one of the lead dogs in the team (and an Alaskan Husky). We are usually out training, but unfortunately our owner is down with the common cold that has been going around.  All the other huskies think I am too self-centered and self-absorbed, which (they tell me) basically means the same thing. But, they wouldn’t tell me what it means.

When we are usually in competitions in Nunavut, I haven’t ever seen weather this bad. Unfortunately, I was left, abandoned some might say, outside. My owner kicked me out after I bit his friend coming to deliver some chicken noodle soup. He gave me a good reason though. He stepped on my fluffy white tail. It wasn’t my fault he just stepped on me like a blind person with no walking stick. Trust me, he had well working eyes.

Inch by inch I started maneuvering my way out from under the snow covered deck where I had been hiding.  I stuck my warm, pink tongue out into the cold and snow. A crisp snowflake landed on my tongue but dissolved quickly. I took a deep breath in, my organs felt as if a thick layer of ice started to cover them like a quilt your grandmother made for you ten years ago.

Then, I gained the courage, and pounced into the raunchy but beautiful weather. The snow made a crisp crunch when I landed into the numbing flakes.  When the snow hit my beautiful fur, it attached to it like a baby baboon to their mother. The snow felt like feathers but were as cold as icicles. I ran around the snow for a while after that.

The snow finally calmed down into a little pour, but by this point I was quite chilled.  Luckily, I am used to being as cold as an ice statue from all the sprinting through wicked winds and pelting snow.  I looked behind me and I couldn’t see the house or the deck I was under just a few minutes ago. I decided not to panic and just kept walking until I found something I recognized. I couldn’t see what direction I came from since my tracks had disappeared.

I saw one tree in the distance. It was slanted a bit to the right after those howling winds came through. It probably would have been wiped of its spruce needles if the weather hadn’t concluded as fast as it started.  I quickly accelerated toward it.  The tree stated growing in size as I kept running toward it’s direction.  I could now spot that there was a little grassy patch underneath the tree were the snow didn’t fall. It was a miracle that there could still be some grass in Churchill in winter anyway.

I finally made it to my destination. After a little run compared to training season, (which is every season here).  I started thinking about my team and the other dogs, thinking if they would call me that hideous word… self-centered. Well, I started slowing down: I was thinking about my team some more. I thought about how I was always not hated, but disliked.  They would always try to be nice to me and I believed it. Now that I had time to really think about, they were just good actors.

I slipped past the low hanging branches of the spruce tree. I plopped myself down on the ground continuing my train of thought. I never felt left out before. It was after I started getting compliments all the time. I guess I started feeling better then the other dogs. I started thinking it was their fault for not being admirable enough, that must be it.  My eyelids started feeling heavy and closing. I gave in and took a long-deserved nap.

It took me a while for my eyes to adjust. I blinked a few times, but my vision was blurred and unclear.  It sounded like tires spinning underneath me. I heard loud barking and bashing of metal.  I saw bars in front of my face and I heard voices start yelling something I couldn’t understand. I started getting cold and was feeling like something was making me drowsy. I heard a familiar voice call out to me before I  passed out.
