Gr. 7-8 – Shading basic forms – part 1
Before you sit down:
- Grab a computer, a set of pencils, an eraser, and a ruler
Today:
We are working on Shading Basic Form – Part 1. For this you will be using pencils to do some basic shading. Then in Part II and III you will be using your shading skills to draw basic shapes.
You are expected to complete Part I today, Part II on Tuesday, and Part III on Wednesday (but you can’t move ahead if you think you are ready.

PART I – Pencil shading – value scale card
- Create a value card with pencil that shows at least 7 different and distinct values. Watch the video below for instruction and follow along. Be sure to have your card labelled carefully for a neat finish
PART II – Pencil shading – drawing along with youtube – basic forms
- Follow the video below and complete a copy of the work to the best of your ability. See the sample of the finished product below.

PART III – Pencil shading – Shading Actual Basic Forms
- Shading of basic forms (actual ones using the forms and lamps in the classroom). This is where you now demonstrate what you have learned by drawing actual shapes using the lamps in the rooms.
- Your sketches must include:
- a minimum of 4 different shapes (some with curves, and some with vertices [corners])
- careful shading for effect
- you may choose to use a blending stomp (Mr. Ewert will supply) for blending your values together
