Circles to Spheres

Today we are studying diameter, radius, circumference, and volume of circles and spheres.  Students will complete initial tasks to show their learning and them embark on a series of missions to prove their knowledge.

The Missions for Each Group

Each group is responsible for solving the 3 missions below.  They will all start on different missions.

Mission #1: What is the profit at the bake sale?

  • You are having a bake sale and you plan to make cookies.  To make them you will spend $3.75 on the supplies to make the dough.  Once the dough is mixed you roll the dough up into a massive ball and discover that it makes a sphere 15 inches in diameter.
  • To make the cookies you need to roll out the dough into a circle that is one 1 inch thick.  You will be using the cookie cutter Mr. Ewert has for you to cut each cookie out of the 1 inch thick dough.
  • If you charge $79 for each cookie you make with the dough, you make as many cookie as possible with almost no dough left over, and sell every cookie at the bake sale, then what is your profit?

Mission #2: Which ice cream make the greatest profit and how much is that profit?

  • You own an ice-cream shop.  You are shopping for Reese Peanut Butter Cup ice cream and you need to which one will give you the most profit.  There are several choices.  To do this you are estimating how many cones of ice cream you can sell out of each bucket.
    • Choice #1 – You can buy it in 5 L pails for $8.95
    • Choice #2 – You can buy it in 10 L pails for $18.79 (but remember that you would likely be buying many at a time and the 10 L pails sell at 3 pails for $45.00)
    • Choice #3 – You can also buy them in pails that have a radius of 15 cm and a height of 50 cm for $24.95 each
  • Note:
    • A Litre has 1000 cubic cm in it
    • Each ice-cream cone that you sell has one scoop of ice cream on it.
    • The scoop you use for making ice-cream cones has a diameter of 6cm
    • Each cone you sell sells for $2.25

Mission #3: How long can we survive once the dome comes down on WBS?

  • The dome has descended upon WBS and it just barely fits over the building.  The emergency crews are working on getting us out but you need to find out how much air is in the dome in order to find out how long we have before we run out of air.

Mission #4: If Brandon S. starts at the door to our classroom and goes to every exit of the school and then returns to the classroom, how many times do the wheels of his wheel chair go around?
